It is wrong and quite obviously so. If this is the work they do on a simple piece then imagine what could go wrong with your kitchen work. I would call them immediately and ask for a supervisor to attend and inspect your job. Request that they redo the vanity. Ensure that the kitchen work is inspected prior to installation and after. Don't sign off on any of the work until you are pleased with the results. You have to live with choices like this ofr a long time so make sure its perfect or as close as it can be so that you don't regret it every time you look at it.

I absolutely agree with you that the overhang discrepancy is unacceptable. I'm trying to understand how it could be different from one side to the other...so the actual surface top of the counter is deeper on one side than the other from the backsplash to the front edge?

First, I would not let them finish your kitchen until you get this resolved. Absolutely not acceptable. Wow, just wow.

This is a $10,000 plus job, 3/4 of it paid for. I really want to get the kitchen top in and then approach them with this... Then at least I have $2400 holding them for the correction.

I know you want to have something to "hold" them with but if you know they are not using templates and doing a bad job them why have them put your kitchen in?? what if they screw that up?? You will be in a kuch worse situation. Id ask them NICELY to redo bathroom and surely they will if its that bad. If they refuse then get a refund and a new contracter and a lawyer i guess

Kitchens are generally more complicated than bath vanities (i.e., more angles, more cutouts). If they could not do the bath vanities well, the kitchen could go really badly. Plus, they can damage things like cabinets, back splashes and sinks if they have to pull it up to fix. If it were me, I would take action now by asking them nicely to template the kitchen and fix the vanity.

one vanity is okay... and the island in the kitchen is fine, but something looked off with the vanity top that compelled me to measure. I felt the drawers looked too far back...

I decided to send them an email with my concerns for no templates made.

For what it's worth, the fabricator who did a fantastic job on all 3 of our bathrooms recently measured, but didn't make a template. Templating is not something all fabricators do. So it's not the lack of template you should be concerned about, but the problems with the final product.

And yes, if they messed this up, I would not let them do the kitchen until they fix this to your satisfaction.

So sorry you are having this problem, as it's so expensive doing quality counter tops and one expects the job to be perfect. I agree with susanalanandwrigley - both her comments about the template and that they must fix this job first before touching the kitchen. Insist that a manager has to come look at what's been done.

And, yes, this would bother me - So much so that I'd question their work on the coming kitchen and hold up on that until this is resolved. Who knows what Will happen in a larger space with more cuts, more intricacy.

Maybe I'm too cautious but I've had some lousy work done in my house by terrible contractors. The first, was relatively benign, or I thought - just window shutters throughout the whole house. What a boondoggle!! It ended up, 8 weeks later, with them removing the. and me hiring someone else. Or the painters that painted the wrong color while I was out of the house (they didn't wait for me to check the color). Wrong color. Luckily I stopped that before they got beyond two rooms.

I have other horror stories but I'll spare you. I'd be loathe to give my kitchen to someone who has already created a problem!
