Really cool! So does it mean that we can only see them every 17 years? Or will there be other groups of periodical cicada in other years with different 17-year periods?

As far as I know, you'll only see a particular group of the periodicals once in 13-17 yrs ... they synchronize in the same area. There are annual/non-periodical Cicadas you'll see every year, as they don't synchronize.

Wow, so is the whole species synchronized? And does it mean that we can tell which species it is based on the year?
