With the onions it is your choice, but if they appear fine and nothing is harming them, there's nothing to lose by leaving them and waiting for the leaves to stat falling over on their own. Or, use it as an experiment. Pull some and cure them now, but leave others and see what they do.

Ruth Stout's books are great, but deep mulching is kinda dangerous if you have venomous snakes around as it creates the exact type of habitat they love. Keep in mind that her climate was very much different from ours (mucn more mild and moist) so our results may be somewhat different from hers.

We have not seen venomous snakes but we have owls cats and dogs roaming freely. There is a larger pasture with woodsy area near a stock tank 1/4 mile from here so they may find that is less disturbing over there.

We are going to do small area that currently we do use for anything. Maybe till this fall and cover until spring.

I was however very excited. Most of the last 30 or so reached 1 pound. And they taste good. 2 got soft to the second layer. We have been so busy having fun and I have been very busy ripping out the weeds. Market is great and I am having lots of fun with it. Not getting rich but still keeping our heads above water.

Thank yall so much. He has been a lot of fun this summer after we got over the poison and got everything cleaned out. He loves his cucumber house and they are really taking off right now. We have great picnics, early breakfast and a pool in there. Training the vines is like training worms they insist on going a different direction. Last year my cucumbers never shut down so I hope they keep going strong.

That is exactly his favorite indoor activity. I just told my son last night I wonder why I never get any housework done when Ryder is here. Haha

Housework is overrated. There's so many things to do that are so much fun, like practically anything and everything, especially when Ryder is there.

I've honestly never been much of a housekeeper, so I can't use that as an excuse, but I wish we had made more trips to the zoo and picnics in the park.

When mine were young as a single mom I never had extra money and had not discovered the pure joy of gardening so we had fun cheap. I didn't want my kids in daycare all the time so we made sacrifices but my kids are happy work hard and enjoy life.

My best friend/daddy in law passed Monday and I regret not writing down many of his gardening hints even tho some were out there they were good for a laugh. He was key in me starting a garden in the first place and always said don't complicate it just plant it, it knows what to do ...

He knew me too well and loved me anyway: )

Luvncannin, I"m sorry to hear about his passing. His influence in your life is a precious memory for you:) His gardening hints will be with you every step you take in your garden. I like his "saying"...seems very wise to me.

Kim, I am so sorry for your loss. I know that you had remained close to him and will miss him terribly. It isn't too late to jot down all his gardening hints. I bet they will pop into your mind from time to time and you can write them down. My dad is in my head and my heart with me when I am in the garden (and when I am out of it too), and I think your father-in-law and best friend will be in your head and heart with you when you are in the garden (and even when you're not). The people we love become a part of us, so even after they are gone, we still carry part of them with us forever.

I believe he loved you so well BECAUSE he knew you so well, not in spite of it.

I hope your precious memories are solace at this time of grieving and beyond.

When your grief seems overwhelming look at Ryder and see all his goodness, his joy and his strength and remember that the qualities that mattered in your father-in-law are not gone---those good qualities live on in you, your son and your grandson. The circle of life is painful at times, but we who live on must cherish the memories of our dear departed ones and keep their memory alive for the generations that follow us.

Thank you all so much. I really do not have any friends where I live as I discovered last night driving around And there was no one I could talk to. So I came here.

My sister in law is also my best best. She has quite the load right now handling everything until weget there. I am going by Floyds favorite feed store in pilot point to see if they have any tomato plants. I have lost so many I need some to fill in the gaps.

Are there any stores in Gainesville that have any left?

Wal-Mart had a few over the weekend, but they were looking dry and tired. I haven't been to Home Depot in Gainesville in the last week, but they had a lot of tomato plants about 10 days ago. If you don't find any there while you are in the Denton-Pilot Point area, you might try the Calloway's Nursery in Denton or, if you're in the mood for a driving adventure, the Mike's Garden Center in Southlake. It is just off Hwy 114 near White's Chapel Rd, though I don't remember if it is right at White's Chapel, or one exit away. Often, Mike's has veggie plants very late in the season, but I haven't been in there since June so don't know what they've had or still have this summer. One of the hospital chains has built a huge new medical facility just west of Mike's, so if you can spot the new hospital from the road, then Mike's is just east of it.

I have a niece in the hospital in Fort Worth and will be heading down there soon, maybe today or tomorrow, or possibly not until Saturday depending on which day she is finally well enough to have visitors. She is not doing very well at all and I have been a bundle of nerves the last couple of days. My sister has both her daughter and stepdaughter in the midst of major health crisis type situations and has had about all the stress she can handle this week. I'd like to think I can squeeze in a visit to a couple of my favorite Fort Worth nurseries while I'm down there, but no matter how hard I try, I never seem able to make it to nurseries when visiting my non-gardening family members. Too many people to see, so little time, I guess.

My family is needier than my bonus family time wise. My eldest sister mega flower and African violet grower, think 100's, has health issues and just had back surgery last week. My mom is 82. When I go to Denton I am always tied up to help them which I mostly enjoy. I usually come home exhausted wondering what happened to the time. With my bonus family we chill hang out visit and enjoy living. And my niece likes thrift stores so maybe a trip to Gainesville Friday will be good.

Back to gardening I am planting everything possible today in all my available spots except where I want to put tomatoes. Hoping for rain
