Orchid stem is short but budding

I have a phalaenopsis amabilis. I've had it for about a year. After the blooms were done I cut the stem to the base. The stem grew but it is much shorter than previous. I have six buds on it (which I'm very happy about) but the stem is about half the length than when I first got it. What did I do wrong? I water it once a week and it sits inside on a window ledge which gets sunlight but not too much. I live in Victoria, BC, Canada. Our climate is very mild, very little snow (the last year we didn't have any) in the winter and our temperatures in the summer mostly range between 25 to 30 degrees Celsius (77 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit). The leaves also seem to be a bit lusterless.
