Hi - the posts are 4x4 and are sunk in concrete. For a structure this tall (8') I would sink them at least 3'; 4' is better if not in a sheltered spot (from wind). Thanks for the question!

I'm not sure how the contractor did this one, but toenailing the framing together usually works. This allows the nail to go in at an angle. Nailing or bolting straight down from the top member into the top of the post isn't a good idea as you would be connecting straight into end grain, which should be avoided. Always use large nails so you get a good bite.

Or did you assemble the entire structure first and then dropped it in the holes and poured concrete? I look forward to your reply. Many thanks

I'm stepping in here with my thoughts. I would set the posts first then build the panels within them. I think it would be so heavy if you built everything first it would be difficult to hold it up and level everything. It's easier to set posts individually and get them plumb and aligned; the rest just follows and you cut the pieces to fit.

hi Savio, I made the entire structure and dig around 2 feet and pour the concrete around the posts.

If you're going to bury the posts in concrete coating the part that will be buried with copper green is a good idea to help protect from rotting. Make sure you slope the top of the concrete away from the post so water doesn't collect.
