Groundhog Control

I had my bolivian rainbow and habanero plants decimated by a groundhog this weekend. There were no fruit yet, just leafy foliage.

I bought one of those haveahart traps with bait of canteloupe, but the problem is the squirrels are triggering the trap! If the squirrels dont trigger it, the chipmunks steal the bait.

Is there any bait I can use that will not attract the lesser rodents? This groundhog is absolutely destructive.

Try some kale. Brassica leaves are their favorite. Not sure how well picked leaves would work but worth a shot.

You might want to invest in a very good fence. It's the only way I can grow anything here.

This is straight from the live trap company. I would think you could find something that would attract the littler pests. If not, consider maybe a "feeder" with peanuts for the squirrels and such that would keep them out of the trap while it is baited with something else for the ground hog.

Too bad with the Bolivian Rainbow. I have one growing this year and it looking beautiful. Full of peppers with dark foliage and the peppers are starting to ripen and turn all the beautiful colors.

I moved to a less urban area this year, so this is a new pest for me. The destruction is breathtaking. It destroyed my green beans and cukes a month ago - i put up a flimsy wire fence with one foot "L" shaped bend on the ground, and that bed has not been touched since. My peppers are potted and not in any place where fence would work.

I think he's desperate if he's targeting hot peppers and some tomatoes.

I have tried lettuce as bait, but the 90 degree weather is making it dry up within an hour or two, so it doesnt look too appetizing. Maybe kale holds its form longer?

Kind of stuck behind a rock and a hard place. Relocating them is illegal in my state. Can't fire a gun or airgun in my town to kill it. Not really sure what to do even if I catch it.

I have had success making them move on by putting used kitty litter in their holes

I say invite your local law makers over for dinner. Serve them a plate of ground pork patties... I mean hog patties... I mean let them eat cake... errr... chuck.

They are terrors when you get them, and if you don't get them this year, next year you'll have many, many more! Illegal or not...the farmers around here carry a shotgun on their tractors and kill them early spring whenever they see them. The entrances to their holes can be so big that a tractor will just drop it's front tire down in it,,creating a day of lost labor farmers cannot afford.

If you'tr afraid that a gunshot will have your neighbors calling the police..there are always mini crossbows...cheap, but lethal.

While it may be disgusting, I've heard you can try peeing near the den entrance, leaving human hair, or dirty clothes. Groundhogs have a good sense of smell, and they are afraid of us.

I've also heard sprinkling ground cayenne helps. I have one that lives in my backyard and it doesn't eat any of my plants, but I have a lot of herbs growing around my vegetables. I mostly notice it eating the seeds that fell out of the bird feeder.

disgusting??? Nah, just a valid excuse.

Just out of curiosity. If it's illegal to relocate a groundhog and illegal to kill it. Is it legal string then up alive for coyotes? I personally relocate them to rich neighborhoods where they can have a buffet of exotic vegetation.

I have heard a lot of people say the smoke bombs work great, and can be used in a way that nosey neighbors will never know. Basically you drop the smoke bomb in the hole and quickly fill the entrance with dirt..no smoke is above ground for anyone to see. Problem solved. I know someone that said it only took one, and they come in 4 packs..

Unless they go bang, they would be no fun.
