Would You Like to Share Your Colorful Rooms?

last modified: 10 years ago

I often see pretty rooms here but, for the most part, they seem to fall in the category of "calm, serene, neutral, understated" etc. Nevertheless certain rooms here come to mind that are colorful, but I would enjoy seeing more of them because to me a room that doesn't have much color just doesn't speak to me. That's a very personal feeling, and no more valid as a judgment than thinking that a colorful room is loud or distracting or not restful. Much of it depends on how color is used, just as the charm of a more neutral room depends on different textures, artwork, subtle patterns, beautiful lighting and many other things. Because a generous use of color is more rare, I would enjoy seeing examples here. It could be any room in your house, or all your rooms, bedroom, living room, study, sunroom, bathroom, you name it. It just has to be more than beige, or gray or taupe!

That is sweet, amck! They must love coming to visit.

What are the paint colors you used in there?

    Thanks, snookums.

The walls are SW Creamy & the trim is SW Snowdrift. The walls are angled so the color constantly changes with the light. We have Creamy in most of the main rooms. It's not too yellowy, but not too stark. That was a factor because we spend time here through the winter months, too.

Thank you. It's a beautiful backdrop for the other colors. I actually have swatches of Creamy.

Oh, gosh, such beautiful, colorful rooms! I've loved looking at each and every one! I can't help thinking that my own home, from all the pics I've posted of it over the years, would be considered one of the serene, neutral ones. And, it is . . . all my adobe walls are painted a warm cream, but I do have colorful art and rugs and accents everywhere. So, can I play, too?

This is my powder room, and yes, the walls are painted the same warm cream, but here's the rest of it:

Punched tin mirror has woven inserts from Chimayo, New Mexico (pronounced chee-my- YO). Mirror and punched tin light fixture, here and all of it throughout our home, were custom created for us by the famous Romero Family tinsmiths of Santa Fe. Talavera tile and sink are from San Miguel de Allende in Mexico.

Santo reverse painting on an antique window, basket with pinon pine branches and cones off of one of our hundreds of trees. Carved San Francisco santo (Hispanic St. Francis, not from the city of San Francisco- LOL!) along with a fetish bear. BTW, this is a Native American inspired powder room, and most of them are Christians, so the santos are just as much a part of their culture as the fetish bear. At least here in NM, and in our NA friends' homes.

Close-up of this well-known signed poster by New Mexican artist, Edward Gonzales. Years ago I took a class taught by Edward and he signed this for me. I love it and designed this room around it, all the way down to the Talavera tiles. He cracks up every time I remind him of that (LOL).
    More art:

And on the short wall next to the door. The small bowl on that top shelf holds some favorite small Native American artifacts (pottery shards, arrow heads) that I've found over the years on our land here. I collect crosses, and this is one of the first I purchased out here. It was made by a very well-known Santa Fe artisan whose name escapes me at the moment. Simple, but it works well in here. Top shelf also holds two hand-carved NA kachinas. I'm not sure which Pueblo they came from.

Towels, greenery, and a one of my many Indian Storyteller statues.

There's also a small, colorful, NA woven rug on the brick floor in there, but I don't have a pic of it. OK, so the walls may not be painted a beautiful color, but I do think that this room of mine is pretty darn colorful. Thanks for letting me play ;- )

Such beautiful rooms! I know some of these pictures have already been posted.

Back of LR, excuse the bad lighting.

Front part of LR. BTW, for those who saw my topic on getting a new light near the FP, I did, and I love it! Unfortunately, it's not in the picture. lol

I've never shown the wall behind me where I stand to take pictures, but here it is during the build. Very bad picture. The right is the booknook with matching built-in's. The left is the entryway. Entryway floor is checkerboard tile, in rust and brown.

Kitchen. Accessories change constantly. Floor is deep red and cream checkerboard tile.

I love color. Hence, I love this topic)) and the rooms in it

I posted this one already..the rest of the rooms are pretty much like it (I mean the amount of color. lol), but the photos are much less recent, and have so much more going on since then-or are recent but spoiled by my presence in the room..))

Actually this one is also might be older than I think-judging by the tree height..Wow. Much older. Maybe couple years ago, a year and a half? It's scary how time flies.

I love color! We will need to re-do our hall bath maybe next year and are seriously thinking about colored retro tile. Of course, DH says then we are not moving because anyone coming in would rip out the "dated" bathroom.

I love colorful rooms. I had them in my last house and I loved them. I tried it in my current house and it was a terrible fail :P we currently have an accepted offer on this house so who knows what will be up next :) I have gotten used to the solid color in most rooms now in my current house. it was really alot of time and effort to find the perfect "cream" color I had in my head.

Old house - a few pics - (they seem so dark!) I can't believe it has been 9 years since I moved out of this house.

Walnut Creek- the rug was from Overstock. It seems to be out of stock but you might be able to find elsewhere. It's just a synthetic. I couldn't find the color scheme I was looking for in wool. The brand name is nuLOOM.

Am loving looking at these wonderful rooms - so much talent and sensibility for great decorating. I have so many comments but the thread is so long, so just these two:

Lynn - I love your powder room. could spend serious time there just looking!. What is the material for that big handsome fetish bear?

Oakley - Your kitchen is one of my favorites; I especially like the floor, but also the colors and style in general. I might have to copy it if and when we move to be near the kiddos. Hope you dom't mind!

    So many beautiful rooms.

Our main living spaces - living and dining rooms, kitchen and sitting area, are all somewhat open to each other. I don't know how it would work, or how I would feel if we had used strong colors in these areas as we have a lot of large windows which frame a lot of green, especially this time of year:

Of course now I realize that you can't quite see the all the green beyond the windows. And it's actually a lot more lush in May (especially) and June.

I do have one room with some saturated color. It's a guest room, and gets used only 2 or 3 times a year. All the bedrooms in our house are fairly small, so forgive the scrunched up furniture:

We also remodeled our mbr 2 years ago and used a bold glass tile in the shower and as the backsplash for the vanity:

While I have seen many beautiful homes painted in beiges and taupes, those tones simply don't suit my personality. I love color and it makes me happy to be surrounded by happy spaces. :)

This is our basement movie room. We've since added wall decor and accessories, but this shows the color. It's Benjamin Moore's Pale Avocado.

This is my home office. It's a Martha Stewart color that was matched in Benjamin Moore paint called Plumage.

And this is my daughter's bedroom, being used by our 9 week old goldendoodle puppy in this particular picture. It's painted in BM's Quartz Stone with gold vinyl polkadots from Etsy added.

Actually I think we all love color and have colorful rooms. Having a neutral and muted or pale color palette throughout a home doesn't mean it isn't colorful. I have said we have neutral gray walls in our open space and several shades of light blue-greens on the walls in the bedrooms. (Preparing to paint the master in SW Rainwashed now.). Fabrics and accessories are from light blue or green to Aqua. I think my home is colorful but soft. I think to some people colorful means bright and multicolored but we've been there and done that. Being in FL now we wanted coastal and calm, but still have plenty of color. Now I have to learn how to post picture.

Loving this thread. My house was pretty colorful but we are getting ready to list it so are in the midst of neutralizing :(. My master was green walls with a white and green lattice patterned carpeting. All the linens and such were red and white.

Sons bedroom had one lime green wall which he loved.

    Kitchen cabinets were sunny yellow.

I am low to medium energy and like color for my living areas but prefer subdued in sleeping areas.

This is my living room in shades of olive, rust, and pumpkin, walls are SW Jersey Cream. Murphy on his chair, looking quite grumpy, and Princess KoKo on the floor looking cute!

I loathe the behemoth of a coffee table but the side to the sofa lifts and DH likes to sit there with his laptop on the table and play solitaire. I would also like to replace the current Karastan that has the ivory background to a darker more colorful version.

So much fun to see these beautiful rooms full of color. I think of most of my rooms as neutral with accents of color but I do have a couple of rooms where I went more bold.

Both guest rooms are colorful. I used a couple of antique pieces in the first one (not all really shown) and a colorful PB bird duvet

Some fern pillow shams were the inspiration for this room.

The copper sink & a print we bought in Hawaii mostly inspired the half bath color.

OMG, the deep purple in Annie's library is gorgeous and perfect. And I've always loved her tangerine powder room and the orange in her kitchen. Brave use of two tough colors which turned out perfectly.

this is the children's bunk room in my house, but I want to paint the woodwork white and the walls and ceiling BM Lemon Ice, a "lighter" (weight-wise) yello
