Overwintering onions in the North

Johnny's has a variety bridger listed for summer planting and overwintering in the North.. http://www.johnnyseeds.com/p-8367-bridger.aspx

That sounds exciting... anyone ever try this? It does seem like they are not early the next year and need a full season though.

My shallots I tried direct sow also did not fare well, can amI possibly try overwintering some of those? If the shallots I planted make tiny bulbs, can I just leave them in the ground for next year?

I am out of romaine lettuce so Johnny's may be getting a fall order from me...
