Can we get a pic of the other side of the room? What are the overall dimensions and where are the big openings in the room? Conversation seating for how many?

I can when I get home--the other side is the dining area, which doesn't have any wall art/window treatments at the moment but has just the buffet and dining set. I am not set on a theme/look but going for warm, traditional

I would begin with a colorful rug and build around it. Your curtains can then be a color from the rug....maybe terra cotta. Then you can choose wall art.

I would get end tables and lamps. The torchier creates a glare.

First I would use the x benches for a coffee table. Then get a rug with terra cotta in it and since you want this to be a conversation area....how about two chairs facing the couch....sort of slanted. Yes, it looks like your room is open....maybe you can use your couch as a divider and put two chairs in front of the window.....you mentioned the other end of the room was a dining room.... so maybe the couch as a divider might work....

Beautiful hardwood, high ceilings and lots of room to work with. You have so many options. Generally, you want a contrast, darker vertical surface, and a lighter horizontal. Also, the safest method is to leave the patterns to the accents, such as area rugs, pillows and such. It really all comes down to your personal style, if it were me, I'd say maybe trade the curtains and drapes in, and go with something more updated to compliment the rest. It looks as if the front door is at the bottom of the stairs, correct? If you would like to separate the dining area from the living room, by all means reposition the sofa to face the windows where the drapery is. Get a rug that you like; that is big enough to fill the space between the sofa and the front of the two chairs that you may consider getting for in front of the window. FYI, for conversation, a preferred distance between seating is no more than 8 feet. So if you wanted to have two chairs near the window, the sofa should be no more than 8 ' away. Hope this makes sense.

First, lose that harsh torchiere lamp in the corner. Send it to live with a starving student in the dorm. The x-stools with a tray on top can serve as a coffee table. The curtains you currently have are fine. The mirror needs to move to a wall where it has some room to breathe, and you could use some art on the wall to the left of the door. A couple of comfy chairs facing the sofa, a rug large enough to hold the front feet of all the seating, and this room is knocked.

I tried to choose something resembling terracotta in the rug and the art. The coffee table is the Clairemont from Crate & Barrel. The chair is one I had on hand that pointed the right direction, but it's not right with that rug. I'll find you a better one.
