Fern hardy in USDA zone 5 or not?

A few years ago, I bought an orchid and this fern grew up in the same pot. I have divided out the orchid so the fern remains in the original pot. It is growing mostly in orchid bark and a little potting soil. It hasn't grown much. I love the leaf so far and am wondering if I dare plant it outside in the ground and leave it there for the winter in our cold northland? Can anyone tell me what it might be and how I should care for it, please? Thanx, Barbara

I'm no fern expert but it looks like it could be a Pteris

I think a lot of it depends on what kind of fern. I live in US zone 5b in an area with hot, moderately humid summers and we have several kinds of fern that are hardy through our winters... I can't remember what kinds, but I know they exist!

I can't help ID your plant; bumping the thread to see if anyone else has ideas.

Thank you for bumping this up. I had hoped to find out what kind of fern it is. Don't think its pteris but its hard to say since it hasn't grown a bit all summer. I had hoped it would put up another leaf or two to give us more to identify. Barbara

It looks like Phlebodium aureum to me. In that case it likes warm to hot temperatures. Rgds

Totally a Asplenium Scolopendrium (AKA Hart's Tongue Fern)! Here is the proof from plantingferns.org.
