The tip in the middle probably is another leaf. The hard lump is the rhizome with probably even another pup trying to bust out of that pot. Repot it Larry!

As for names, we have a few people who name their plants, including myself. I think your plants grow better when you talk to them.

Are sans better grown in a trough rather than a deep pot? A pot thats wider than it is tall?

GreenLarry, idk if they are, but I have most of mine in clay azalea pots so they'll have a little more room to spread out on top...

It depends on the species and size of the plant. I have some sans whose rhizomes grow deep. But in general, I would agree with Mary.
