Yes it can be saved. Pull out all the weeds etc. Plant it in the ground. Since it is summer, don't forget to water it at least a couple of times a week. Also put some mulch in the root zone. When you dig the hole to plant it, make sure it is in a sunny spot and amend the hole with cow manure and/or compost. It should thrive and produce a few flowers this year. The real show will most likely be next spring. Don't prune it now. Wait for early spring. As I read from the label of your plant, it is an Earnest Markham clematis like this in my collection. They grow big.

One other thing. I want to plant it on one of the posts of my pergola it will get morning sun but afternoon shade because milk weed will block it till the butterflies are done. then it will come out (milkweed). does that sound OK?

Plant it deeper than it was in the pot, about 4"-6".

It should be fine with half day sun and bright shade for now. It won't climb the pergola post without help since it climbs by winding the leaf stems (petioles) around supports that are pencil thickness or less. So you will want to give the post a wrap of wire or the support of strings that run up the pergola post, though it probably won't need that until next year.

The post already has chicken wire around it and cardinal vine growing it.

I would prune it now. Pinch it back to two buds up from the ground after you plant it deep. You want to encourage more vines up from the buried crown.
