Roots without a rhizome?

I cut a pup off a mother today and some roots fell out with it. The roots aren't attached to a rhizome. Will they root and grow, or simply die off? I have put them in rooting compound and soil to watch and see anyways. The pup I potted was getting pressed against the side of a very unforgiving ceramic pot. I'm hoping it isn't too small to make it, have never cut a pup this small before.

I think it'll make it, but it may take longer to grow. I was shipped a plant with a broken leaf so the seller sent me a small pup. It's coming along, but much more slowly than usual.

Hi Melanie! Your pup should grow fine. A seller from Haverhill MA sold me a Whitney, and when it arrived it was only a 1 1/2" - 2" pup. I planted it and left it on My side porch and its doing just fine; actually has a new leaf coming up...

I agree with everyone. Your little offset will be fine, it has very good roots and it's not that small. The loose roots will just shrivel and dry up.

Do you know the variety of your sans? The offset looks like it might have a variegated edge.
