I grew up in that kitchen! I think it's great that you want to keep the cabinets and I hope someone has a cost effective idea for you about how to touch up the finish, which I assume is enameled steel—think appliances. Your kitchen is cool. I looked on ebay and they have many old metal cabinets that would be nice for a pantry.

I have heard of some taking the doors to an auto paint shop to be repainted that way.

Thanks suezbell, I had not thought of that and yes you are right. I will definitely want counter space by the stove. I will be adding a dishwasher to the left of the sink, so that will mean taking out those cabinets, maybe I could put them by the stove? I do like the idea of a butcher block though... This particular stove is very wide and will not remain in the kitchen, its' so old. Beautifully maintained though with its own counter space! The only rust spot I see on the cabinets is the one on the corner by the sink, you can see it in the photo. Not bad for a 67 yr old kitchen!

In the early 90s I moved into a 40s house with metal cabinets and countertops. It was very noisy. Glass on metal, clang clang. Metal on metal in the drawers, rattle rattle. I ripped it out and put in oak cabinets and tile countertops, the big style back then. The kitchen became much more pleasant.

That stove is the jewel in your kitchen getting rid of it would be a huge mistake on your part,these things are worth a lot of money , the cabinets look gorgeous too, Just replace the floor with something retro and let this kitchen be the hub of your home ,no need to replace anything from what I can see .

What is to the left of the fridge and what is to the right of the stove?

er612, to the left of the fridge is a small eating area with built in cabinets on each side, as pictured below. I had thought of making this a huge pantry because I really don't see myself eating there when the dining room (behind the wall where the stove and fridge are) is just as close and has a nice view of the backyard. Buy who knows, maybe a pantry/office?? LOL!!

To the right of the stove is the hallway door leading to the foyer.

Genevieve, thats the exact black and white floor I was thinking about! I LOVE it! The whole house screams retro and is in such great condition. But I worry about the functionality of that stove. I guess maybe there's someone out there who could test it. The only thing modern will be my super awesome 2 door fridge with bottom pull out freezer. It fortunately white so will go great in the kitchen.

Oh WOW! It would be so unique to have an auto body shop paint those cabinets tangerine, or aqua, or.....

chiflipper absolutely! But I don't know if the cabinets would hold up. They are insulated with something which makes them quieter. But I would sure like an auto body finish on those and I adore tangerine!

If you can, please post a layout or dimensions of the kitchen. I would definitely repurpose the dishwasher cabinets next to the stove. Get some estimates on painting the cabinets. They will look incredible. Off white cabinets and white counters would look fresh.

Maybe a powder coater could do a nice baked on powder coating that would be very durable. Google "powder coating near me" to find a company that does this.

Are they St Charles cabinets. If so, you should be able to find more.
