You bought one with a already dying top. Flat green almost gray I bet and plenty shriveled? With short leaves maybe?

You have to buy one with a top that looks like it saw the Hawaiian sun yesterday!

Stan, it was a pineapple, in a supermarket. They never look like the one in your picture but the one I bought did appear healthy. And it was FairTrade

I know Larry. That houseplant is just a "best case available" Pineapple. It was around $30 too. Usually they sell them small with a very young Pineapple fruit on it.

Pineapple will grow fruit indoors. So,dont give up. Coffee thrives indoors too. You might try the Supermarket and try Taro or even Chayote. Sprout in spring,put them outside for winter. I tried all that..and still do . I just planted a Mango tree outside I started from Supermarket fruit.

I know people in the UK who grow them indoors with high intensity lighting..you could grow a huge number of tropical and subtropical fruits doing that. Heck with a grafted dwarf Mango..even fruit.

Fun,not cost effective is the reason!

A pineapple can be grown in a small space. The leaves will bend to fit the space, and trim the ones in the way just like with yucca.

I just take the discarded tops from fruit stands or restaurants. Rareseeds sales a pack of small rooted ones for nine bucks in the spring.

Keep trying next spring, you'll be happy you did
