I totally understand wanting to protect your wood floors, but the reality is that wood is relatively durable. You're ruining its beauty by hiding under those distracting runners. I think a single rectangular rug at the front door is sufficient to clean guests' feet and after that, you just let the floor be a floor :)

I also want to add-- people are probably walking on your wood floors because they are afraid of getting your runners dirty.

I agree with CF. Your guests might start feeling like they are in a cattle shoot . I would consider eliminating the runner at the door completely and placing an area rug there. It will protect your floors when guests gather inside the door as they often do and please eliminate the little runners going into each room. It makes the hall look like a road map. If you live your life afraid your house will get some use it probably won't get any and you will have a very dull life.

Use a dark area rug, they won't fill like they're dirting it up. There are round area rugs & octagon too.
