Tillandsia cyanea on my blog

They are two completely different species. T. lindenii is a more robust grower, with a bigger spread and somewhat larger flowers. Side by side the differences are very apparent.

I would just like to set the record straight; although Tillandsia
lindenii and cyanea both come from the area of Peru, and although they appear
similar, they are two “separate” species.

Tillandsia lindenii also comes in a pink form as well as
the more common purple one and Tillandsia cyanea comes in the common purple
form, a pink form and a not so common white form.

Both plants have been used in breeding programmes and
have some hybrids registered on the BCR (unfortunately not all have
accompanying photo’s). However in my
opinion, the “standout” Tillandsia. “Lindenii hybrid” is Tillandsia ‘Anwyl Expo’
with its beautiful pale mauve/ blue flowers.

Not to be left behind, Tillandsia cyanea has thirteen registered
hybrids to its name, and there’s no doubt that Tillandsia ‘Creation’ is “head
and shoulders” above all the other hybrids with its erect inflorescence with multiple
spreading branches of cyanea like pink to dark rose “paddles” with each
containing up to 15 to 35 spreading violet blue blooms.

As well as the above these two plants have also been crossed
with each other and have produced the four registered hybrids of Till. ‘Caeca’,
Till. ‘Duvaliana’, Till. ‘Duvalii’, and Till. ‘Emilie’. Unfortunately of the
four there is only one photo shown on the BCR and that is of Till. ‘Emilie’ which
although nice, isn’t in the same class as Till. ‘Creation’ in my opinion.

Wow that Tillandsia 'Creation' is insane!

When do they bloom? Mine hadn't bloomed since I bought it..so this year I moved my cyanea into sun and it really had no problems handling that..even has some maroon coloration now.

Creation is now on the list for me too-ha.

Stan - I'm sorry but it's no good asking me about cultural advice because that particular bromeliad is one I've never had any luck with. Mine was flowering when I bought it seven years ago and although it's produces numerous pups, none of them have ever flowered for me. Maybe I should put Till. 'Creation' on my shopping list also, I might have more luck with that.
