I’ve been enjoying going through the old posts on this forum. This is my first post. I’m a windowsill orchid grower. A few months ago, I repotted one of my phals (a Kaleidoscope-type) in orchiata. The pot is 4 1/2”w x 5 1/4”h (11.5 x 12.5cm). Since then, it’s grown a new leaf and just started flowering. But just as it got ready to bloom, it started growing 8 new roots - all along the top of the pot and starting to go over the edge. None are trying to go down into the bark. I don’t really want it to send energy into a bunch of air roots alone and if it wasn’t flowering, I’d repot it now. But I’m hesitant about repotting it while it’s in flower.

Any ideas as to why these roots aren’t going into the media? Is the media too dense? Is the pot too narrow? A skewer left in the pot is just slightly moist near the bottom. Nothing looks wrong with the leaves and flowers.

Any suggestions as to what to do in this case? Should I wait or ignore the flowers and pot it anyway, getting the roots under the media?
