A plumeria has to split before it blooms. A branch usually splits into three parts, sometimes two. You'll lose blooms if you prune it now, but it won't hurt it. Most people prune in the winter when it's dormant so it doesn't "bleed" so much. In the meantime, stake it up so it doesn't fall over. They need staking many times, because they do tend to get top heavy.
