tile can be inexpensive, especially subway tile. whats going in this empty space? its not crazy to tile to the floor, and UP to the level of any upper cabinets elsewhere but i'd need a wider shot to know for sure.

Here is a wider shot starting where the other left off. On the left of the first shot is a basement door which almost touches the countertop when opened.

I'm with your wife. Otherwise I'd stop at the end of the counter, before the end of the window -- having a block of tile that projects out from the counter to the end of the window is likely to look the most awkward.

tiling that space behind the basement door could look very nice and trim. rather than a hanging tile row.... but do it to undercabinet height not window height.

This might help -- I imagine a trash can will be in front of this too, or something...

So that's two votes that it is not weird to take the tile to the floor. I guess I am the one off base here. I'm still leaning toward ending at the end of the counter. Is there any standard, or does it basically come down to aesthetic preference? Thanks again for the feedback.

If the basement door is open most of the time, then you can get away with anything! :))

if it were my kitchen, white tile i'd fill that whole wall. a fancier pattern i'd do photo #1.

Tiling that area will also make the area sort of look clean. Be sure to put a bumper where the doorknob will hit.

I think we have decided to do the full wall going from floor to the bottom of the cabinet level. Thanks nnigrt for the idea and acm for the mock up!
