Put in a 'Munger' about five weeks ago and it's really taking off and hopefully it proves hardy. Also, a friend had passed along a black raspberry that was hybridized in Alberta many years ago and said to be a good selection, though my friend was unable to provide a name for it.

I planted a 50 foot row of "Black Jewel" black raspberries in 2014. This year I have my first full crop. They survive well so long as they have snow cover (below -35°C, north of Quebec city). I prune the canes fairly short and pin them to the ground in the fall (to ensure they are covered with snow), then tie them up in the spring. However, this year they have aphids, which may have infected them with viral disease from the wild red raspberries nearby. The new grow canes look just fine, but the fruit bearing canes that had the aphids have crinkly, pale green leaves. I've also had some cane borers, but the plants have so many canes that they aren't really harmed. Black raspberries are my favorite fruit!
