Building Modern and Rustic

We are building a modern/rustic cabin in the mountains of Colorado. It is a very modern shape with rustic elements such as rusted steel and reclaimed lumber. Interior is a mix of drywall and lumber sided walls. I think the styles compliment each other very well but occasionally question will it be modern enough. ..will it be cabiny enough. Just looking for others that have mixed these styles and what they felt worked well.

We have a modern house that we built in the mountains of Colorado, with no rustic elements. What you're describing, except for the modern shape you mention, sounds like a lot of the houses that I see being built in the mountains these days. Often they're called "mountain modern," though if you ask me, they're not very modern. Or mountain vernacular, though that tend to also include big huge tree logs that aren't actually supporting anything. Those with the old lumber and rusted metal remind me of the old mining structures that we see here and there while hiking. I think that's the intent. I think the people who buy and/or build these houses think they work well (it's not my preferred style). It seems that at times there are too many exterior materials, so they look a bit overly busy to me; you may want to decide how you feel about that.

There is a fine line between 'beauty' and 'train wreck'. You may want to seek local professional assistance.

We engaged an architect, artist and GC that have all done an incredible job. I am not concerned about a train wreck

Just looking to see others experiences and ideas.

I'm sure it will all come together beautifully and it sounds like the perfect combo for your neck of the woods.

Done right - I love the mix of outdoors / cabin - like and modern. Olson Kundig is a MASTER

There's a great mix here of VERY modern, with the older woods / shiplap, etc.

Jannicone,

Olson Kundig is a beast. Love the homes! I have one of his books and the pictures are just gorgeous. I love the Sliding Corten wall that covers the windows on Sol Du Cabin!

I am thinking of ways to try to incorporate something like this in my outdoor design. Our local art museum did a short retaining wall of Corten and had the museum initials laser cut out of it - I only drive by so can't get a pic but it looks amazing - an unexpected use of the material. And yes - Kundig IS a beast. Masterful.

Jannicone,

I was at ICFF and saw some of the door handles and cabinet pulls that he sells. They are wonderful and have a great feel to them. Considering them for my kitchen drawers. Unfortunately, the lengths are a little off from what I wanted.

This just went up on FineHomebuilding. Reminded me of this thread, with the modern shape, drywall, and lumber. I think it comes together beautifully, and rustic modern works very well together.

kundig whistler house

This is my favorite Kundig house that might give you inspiration for your modern/rustic mix. It's a little less raw then some of his others.

Lake Flato is another firm to check out if you want to see modern with rustic materials mixed. Their stye is a little more polished then Kundig.
