Zone 5b

I'm a forum newbie here, and I have a potted May Night salvia whose buds never open, they get about an inch's growth on them and then droop, turn brown and eventually die. I'll prune those back because I'm seeing fresh growth behind the dead buds only to have those suffer the same fate.

What am I doing wrong? It bloomed wonderfully for about a month after bringing it home from the nursery. I attached some pictures- hopefully you can see what I'm talking about.
