I don't mind the dark furniture. Can the table be turned the other way? A new chandelier would be nice to brighten the space. I think a hutch would be wonderful in the corner- a place for linens, good china etc. Or a floor lamp with a cozy chair for reading. Or a built in desk. Or a wall of shelves for books....lots of options. If you turn the table and center it under the light you would have room for a buffet on the wall to the left of the alcove. It's a great space! Just decide if you want it more formal or casual.

Bring your table out under the light fixture, replacing it with a new drum chandelier hanging 34" or less above the table. If the hutch idea doesn't work for you, add lighting and glass shelves in the alcove, painting it a contrasting color to the rest of the room and using it for decor/display. You could also do a built-in bar there.

it seems, your living area is adjacent n connected... definitely turn the table around, you have plenty of space..

for a simpler solution, try installing a table height shelf, full width of alcove.. and hang a nice vertical painting on it.. install spot light overhead.. you do need some art/interest on those walls.. place decor items on either side of painting..
