Orchid companion plant(s) in same pot?

I bought a cattleya type (BLC?) recently. It had a couple of other smaller (not orchids) plants in with it. I don't know what they are, but the orchid and those plants are all flourishing. The orchid has bloomed and has now started a new pseudbulb and leaf. Is it common practice to grow some other plants in the medium? I'm thinking maybe like something to help fix nitrogen, or maybe help to break down the medium to release nutrients, or just to make a network of fine roots to anchor the orchid. Any thoughts? OR should I just yank them out?
