1) You could bleach/paint the ceiling joists white giving it a more bright airy feel
2) You could put up floating shelves for open storage, which also decorates the walls
3) Switching the base cabinets in the kitchen to drawers instead of doors (better use of storage)
This gives a more contemporary look but still rustic

Is the sink next to the refrigerator? If so, move it to the window to gain a more efficient layout. I agree with K.-trash the cab doors. Go light or dark, If budget allows change the flooring counters and appliances. Make sure it works for your use.
1. Is it a vacation home?
2. Do you use it for summer or winter? Skiing, Hiking/biking etc.
3. Are you a sportsman, fishing or hunting?
All these factors play a big role. Put together a good "wants and needs" list and let reality sink in before you go too far.

Thank you both for the ideas. I like the floating shelves and the bleaching idea for the joists. But for the shavers how would I hang then on the ceiling line second pic shows how it is angled.
