I really don't expect to have hardly anyone respond - just wanted to give someone who already fusses with dahlias the option. ;) ;)

I love dahlias but haven't grown them in years. They just don't like my clay soil, drought spells and heat. I think they are lovely in May but they sure do run out of energy fast in summer. I don't grow fussy fowers either, Harriet. If they cannot handle our conditions, I just skip them and move on to something else that is happy to grow in the conditions we have here. There's not much I've ever grown that I think is worth a whole lot of extraordinary effort.

That's my motto now, for sure.

My mother grew lovely dinnerplate dahlias in the Seattle area when I was a girl, so of course I wanted them when I married and moved to Oklahoma. I gave up after a few years as well. Now I grow zinnias, coneflowers, daylilies, iris, tall phlox, shasta daisies because they are all foolproof. The only person I ever knew who grew them successfully in OK. was an old woman who lived on a small branch with silty, sandy soil and a shady yard. She had the most incredible dahlias and tons of colorful begonias and impatiens...and a small pump in the stream that she watered with constantly. I do know that people in Tulsa grow them because I saw them at the fair a few years ago. You may join the Urban Farm Guild of Tulsa and offer there if no one here takes them. That forum has members all over eastern Ok, not just in Tulsa.

Harriet, am I understanding you're in the Tulsa area? I'm in SW OKC. I would love to have them, but don't have time to drive to Tulsa at this time. Too bad. They're lovely!

That's terrific news! I'm doing the happy dance for both of you today. I am so happy y'all are home.

Now that you're home, I'm going to nag you a little bit to be sure to take care of yourself too. Okay? I know you'll be busy watching over his health and his care, but don't forget to take care of yourself too. You've both been under a lot of stress. I'm sure that being home cuts the stress level quite a bit, and I hope you are able to take a little time for yourself, whether that means sitting in a lawn chair and admiring your flowers, or weeding or whatever. I always find that time in the yard and garden is calming. Well, it is calming as long as I'm not chasing a deer or rabbit around the garden because "somebody" (yep, that would be me) left the garden gate open or something.

Continued prayers for a full recover and best wishes that life will get back to normal for both of you as quickly as possible.

I hear ya! It's amazing how you can function at a high level for the stressful crisis, then when the pressure is off, you just want to collapse in your recliner for, oh, I don't know, maybe a year or two! lol I am adjusting my priorities - floor mopped? Nope. Don't care. Laundry all caught up? Nope. I think I will make it ok, my grown children, friends, and neighbors are all very helpful. And, yes, my garden is refreshing to look at and see flowers and bushes blooming and fig trees with tiny little figs on them. Thanks for your encouragement - everyone on this forum has been wonderful.

Great to hear you guys are home and everything is going good. Hopefully life will be back to "normal" soon.
