Dain in New Mexico
Hi everyone. I havent posted an update in a while so i took a few pictures this morning of what I've got going on.
Arabicum (from Tracy) and and Obesum (from Kukuan) sprouts! These guys are getting several hours of bright, high altitude, New Mexico sun every day. Two weeks old!
Next up is my first attempt at bonsai. This guy is on his third bloom cycle in the last 8-9 months. The new branch from the side is cute.
Next up a seedling from Ko seeds. It's a year old, grown somewhat hard, and pruned once.
Another from seed, lots of branching. Expected red/black single flowers.

Seedling from Kukuan's seeds. I saw in another thread someone was commenting about sprouts with three leaves. This seed had three cotyledon leaves, and then had three first true leaves, something Ive never seen before! I pruned it pretty early, and then a second time a month or so later. It has a total of six stems, four large and two small. I think it needs a bigger pot!
Last but certainly not least, Rinoa's 'Attractive' opened for me this morning, and certainly is one of the most beautiful flowers I've ever seen in person.

10 years ago- 10 years agoHere is that seedling in question. It did keep sets of three for the first two sets of leaves. As I said I pruned it very early. I was hoping that the second prune would lead to more branching on the higher 3 stems. Unfortunately it did not. But as you can see here there was an amazing amount of symmetry from a very early age, the likes of which I haven't seen in any other seedling.

Gorgeous bloom!! Nice collection. I remember your bonsai. Marica, Dain's is actually the slanted tree I was referring to on one of your posts where you expressed curiousity about how the slant was achieved. Stuart may have one, as well.
Dain, try pruning that last one again during a very active growing period; perhaps next spring to give the branching a good amount of time to develop.
Cut at a nice diagonal, 1/4" above 2 internodes ... This is where the branching will develop. The lower side of the cut should face the inside of the pot, with the high side more visible to the eye. This will more aestheticly hide the lance. Also, pruning where internodes are more closely together (stacked) will produce best branching.

I don't really do a lot of training. I let the plant do what it wants and just try to tidy up the result. That plant did most of it's tipping on it own, as the caudex grew in the shallow pot. This is what it looked like last year when i first moved it into that bonsai pot.
