Foyer Ideas for Lighting

last modified: 10 years ago

We are building a new home and I am lost on light fixtures (style color size etc). I would like to start with my foyer which is open to the kitchen and great room. I have attached a few pictures of the model of the home we are building. We did mostly the same colors. Ours is a lot like this model. We have already bought the front door which a picture is attached. Help please?? I attached more pics but they are not showing.

This is the light in the model and I would like to change mine to something else.

I just do not know. There is so much I like. Does modern-traditional work. I do like somethings understated. The door leads to a large courtyard that the house surrounds. I will try to post pics that we have gone with. This is the model and I copied a lot of it.nI have done no lights yet. I just don't know which way to go.

Front door and foyer is to the right. Our fireplace style has not been decided. We do not have beams just plain 12 foot ceiling.
Room above is to the left of great room. Kitchen is on right.

We live in North Scottsdale, Arizona, a green desert. Our house on the outside is SpNish Clolonel. The front door is dark bronze.

this is the back of our kitchen , but without this stove hood, beams and lights. The foyer, kichen, bar area and great room are all open to each other. I need lights for above the island also.

I had a feeling this was Arizona. Funny... So is the door solid bronze, without glass and/or scroll work? Do you have a pic of door?

I posted another comment before previous one, but it disappeared, somehow. Wanted to say the house you're building looks beautiful. Love the dark cabinets with light counter in kitchen. Really nice choices. I am still trying to figure out if the door in the first pic you posted is the door you will be using - the one that is pictured with the light fixture.

What about something like this for foyer?

There are many choices in lighting - and as I said in previous post - it really is such a personal thing. You don't have to let the style of your house dictate your lighting choices. But since you, personally, are building this style of house - I would think it's because you really love the style - and, therefore, you can go with that. You can really narrow down the field - with going with lighting of the Spanish Colonial/Mediterranean type of genre. Within that scope - you can find pieces that are more modern takes on it. But I would say since you are building this beautiful house (and I always love the feature of the house being wrapped around courtyard. Just love that, btw) - why not go with the style of your house - and just find interesting lighting within those parameters. I think it will blend with - and serve to enhance your space. But - again - you don't have to let the style of the house dictate your choices. There are any number of ways you can go.

Thank you! But I do think I like simpler things than heavy Spanish. My fixtures are mostly chrome but I like some of the new gold-silver looks too. I also like some of the French chandeliers I see. I am so totally lost. They used all Currey Brand in the model. I thought they were kind of pricey.

That is the door, it is 10' tall. I know it looks black but is bronze. Thank you so much for the complements but This is the model and I copied a lot of what we are doing. We did take 2 models and combined the best of both. I just did not know where to go with the lights all thru the house. And what to do to decorate the fireplace, what sone, ect. I may do that myself. WE are trying to do some of the tile work, etc.

I was going to show you some industrial styled chandeliers that I thought might also be interesting in your space - but then I read your post about your preferences for silver, gold and French... so, I shifted gears...

Here are a couple of gold pieces - with sort of a modern French nod...

There are about a gazillion choices in lighting. And it is such a personal choice. Both of these chandeliers are from a company that I really like, called Possini.

The nice thing about a chandelier - or any light fixture - is that you are not married to it. So - whatever you choose - it is not a really serious thing.

The main thing that I believe - is that if you love a piece of furniture, light fixture - whatever it is - it will work. If you love it - that is the thing that matters most. It looks to me like you have great taste - and you can trust it. Go with what you like. Just make sure the size is right for the space; i.e. if you have a huge foyer - you don't want a miniature chandelier, etc. And anyone from whom you are purchasing lighting - who is professional - should be able to understand dimensions of the space and what you would need for those dimensions. Not so hard to figure out without professional help - but if you can talk to someone, and have measurements, it can be helpful.

It's your house - and you should have things that you love in the space. Go with what you like and it will all fall into place. And of course, you can always work with a designer - one who understands your vision - and/or perhaps a local lighting company, with whom you wouldn't mind doing business that may be able to better help you to coordinate the process. But I think if you just go with what you like - find a chandelier for foyer, for example, and then let that be your 'inspiration piece' - to sort of coordinate other lighting around - it could work. And just to add to this - that every light fixture in your house does not have to be the same style. So you have flexibility on that. But since you have an open concept type of space, you may want to just have the fixtures sort of relate to each other in some way.

I love those but can I really put that in front of my door. They are so different from each other. I do like industrial too. I think your very first chandelier or the industrial would look better in front of this door. I have spent days and days on the internet and I just don't know how to narrow it down. I would call a professional but I just don't know who to call. Even a few hours with someone would probably help me. Est Est in Scottsdale designed the model. Thank you so much for your encouragement!

    You're welcome. My pleasure.

Yes - the style of the door is the thing. That's what I was taking into consideration; that's why I went industrial, as another option.

Here is one of the industrials I had:

I have another one - I have to find it. What about rustic? It looks like that is basically along the lines of what they're using in the model.

Then there is this style, as well. This is an updated traditional, with a touch of gold...

Something like this could be interesting.

As I keep saying - it's such a personal choice. But I think that you can sort of narrow down the options for in front of your door, style wise; but you do have many options within the categories. I would say it would be rustic, industrial - of course you can go Spanish Colonial/Mediterranean specifically. A Google search for wrought iron chandeliers brings up a lot of interesting ideas that would work in your space. And, again - just go for what you love. You are not obligated to the chandelier/fixture forever more - so, just have fun with it. And, also, the chandeliers do not have to be in these categories for them to work in your space. You have a good eye - and if you love the chandelier/fixture, and it looks like it would work - go for it!

If you would like to consult with someone in your area - you can find some resources through Houzz. If you click on the 'Find Professionals' option at top of page - it will take you to a page where specialties are listed; click on Lighting (on left of page) - and a bunch of info will come up for available pros in your area, and you can read the reviews.

I really love the eclectic in design, also.

So funny to see your post come up now as I logged in - because earlier today, I saw a pic of a Mediterranean style entry with opulent gold chandelier and thought of you. There is absolutely no reason that you could not do the gold in foyer chandelier. Then - perhaps continue some gold accent in some of your other fixtures. They don't all have to be gold - but maybe some clear glass, etc. that just would not conflict with the gold... just so that everything cooperates. I think if you went with pieces that you really love - the process will be easier for you. No reason you can't have the gold in your house. It could be stunning. And, I actually think they are using some sort of gold toned metal on pendants in kitchen model? Might be my computer screen playing tricks on me - but that's how it looks. And, really, no reason you couldn't have gold in your foyer and antique bronze in your kitchen. I mean... mixing and matching might be very interesting. I actually think that might be what they are doing in the model fixtures - but in the reverse... or something to that effect.

My approach with it might be to do the gold chandelier in foyer - with clear glass pendants in kitchen, with wrought iron chains - and another chandelier in the space - with more subtle gold detailing.... something to that effect. But really - I could do anything. I think I would go with what I like - but just be aware of finding some common ground between the elements - since it's an open concept space.

Here's the stunning pic I saw earlier: [https://www.houzz.com/photos/old-world-luxe-mediterranean-entry-los-angeles-phvw-vp~3417177[(https://www.houzz.com/photos/old-world-luxe-mediterranean-entry-los-angeles-phvw-vp~3417177)

And I just came across the ones below:

I say go for the gold. It's your house. I think you have fantastic taste - and as I mentioned, I love eclectic, also. But, really - I don't even think this is a matter of 'eclectic'. You have a Spanish Colonial style house - and you want a gold chandelier. Period. I mean... there is no reason that you have to match your chandelier to your door! It all depends on what you want - and what feels comfortable to you. Gold chandeliers are classic. Spanish Colonial/Mediterranean style houses are classic. It works. And that combination has actually been working for a long time.. long before anybody would have considered it 'eclectic'.... etc.

Opinions, styles, tastes vary widely among the general public - and among professionals in the decorating field, as well. I am just saying this to say: If you do consult with any lighting specialists, designers, etc. - make sure that they understand 'YOUR' vision - and not the other way around. And I think you 'can' trust yourself. You have really great taste.

You should have things in your house that you love, period. But I really do think the combination of the gold element with the style of your house could be stunning. It's a classic combination.
