Hello,

I have three squash varieties including Sugar Hubbard (basically Green Hubbard), which seems to have set about 4-5 squash for two plants.

The squash closest to the roots on their runner are already quite big, maybe 2/3rds of mature size or larger. However, squash further down on the same runner are tiny. I do not think this is a case of non-fertilization, because these fruits have been there for at least a couple of weeks, are approximately tennis ball-sized, and have not shriveled or grown soft, and seem quite firm and are taking on the shape characteristics of a developed hubbard including bumps etc.

But the ones near the roots are much much bigger. The plants seem to be healthy, and I don't see obvious signs of dehydration, but the runners are not able to set new roots since they sprawl outside of their bed.

Do squash further down the runner from a fruit that set earlier often develop like this? Is it still possible that the squash didn't really set, or might abort anyway due to nutrition issues? Sorry I don't have pictures, but I am not sure what that would serve in this case.
