I like the look of single thread on hand-stitching...it disappears into the fabric better.

The only time I've ever seen anyone use double thread was for sewing on buttons. I always use single thread for the binding myself.

I use a single thread but if doing a baby quilt that I expected will get a lot of washing, I'd use a double. I've not had single thread fail yet but it's surely a personal preference.

Single thread for everything except buttons, which I use double thread.

I use a single, and like Bonnie, I knot every 8-10 inches. Just in case.

I also use a single thread, double when sewing on buttons. Recently I replaced the binding on a quilt I made DS#1 in 1993. The binding had started splitting at the fold ----- the single thread hand sewn to hold down the binding on the back was still holding strong. The quilt had no tears or bad stains after 23 years, but it needed washing in the worst way. It needed washing twice --- and now it is clean and fresh smelling and has a new binding. :o)

I've always used double, it just strikes me as stronger. Maybe too because I've hand sewn since I was small, I'm used to sewing w/ a double thread.

Except for something like hand rolling a silk scarf, I'd tack it down w/a single thread.

Someone suggested sewing the binding with quilting thread which is stronger than regular thread. I use a single thread so will try this tip.
