pressure regulators?

this setup is pretty old, the irrigation valves are toro 232's

the devices after the valves on the risers appear to be pressure regulators?

I would prefer to eliminate them if they are not really necessary. There will be mostly sprinklers and a few drip lines.

the final risers are 1/2" so there is a step up in pressure from the 1" supply line
