Endless Summer - Bloomstruck

last modified: 10 years ago

I just bought an ES Bloomstruck...with 2 spent blooms on it. So far the colour of the blooms seem to be more vibrant pink than the Original...also the reddish stems and dark green leaves...very beautiful.

I planted it in full sun (south facing) last week. Unlike my ES Originals (which wilt very badly in full sun) it seems to be doing very well in ground with no wilting at all. Does anyone else have Bloomstruck in their garden? Please tell me how yours is doing. Any photo would be greatly appreciated as well.

Thank you in advance!

I do not have it but mopheads can be very sensitive to afternoon sun. If the new shrub already has a large root system, it will be able to absorb water faster/better in hot times so keep it mulched and keep the soil as evenly moist as you can. And enjoy! You can do a forum search for "Bloomstruck" and see who may already have it.

Coincidence! I planted a good-sized Endless Summer "Bloomstruck" here in Toronto around the same time that you did. Mine had one full bloom and a couple of developing blooms.

Are you in Southern Ontario? It was so hot and humid at the end of July/start of August that I am surprised that your Bloomstruck was doing ok in full sun. Mine is planted in part sun (1-2 hours in the early morning, 1-2 hours in late afternoon, a tiny bit of filtered sun during the day) and is doing great so far. It started to wilt at the end of last week because I held off on watering due to expected heavy rain, but now that the heavy rain has come it is looking perky and healthy. The shade is from a nearby Birch tree so I need to keep an eye on the soil--it can get dried out quickly. Lots of compost and mulch on top of the bed.

I planted a Limelight Hydrangea at the same time but in a full-sun garden bed. Disaster! With the high heat I had to water a lot, and all the leaves just shriveled up and died. It really looks like too much water, but the plant was dying because of the heat so I didn't know what else to do. Now this week it has been cooler but so much rain! Limelights are tough but I'm not sure this one is going to make it. I think I may have planted it a bit too deeply.

Very nice FADI! And ironic in a way...

Your blooms look great and I was looking at my mophead blooms yesterday and some of them are looking sad and spent. A few are starting to begin to turn aaaalmost brown and some are brown.

Enjoy yours and keep posting the blooms. Makes me feel like printing your pictures and putting them where my old spent blooms are! :o)) Ha!

I had planted a few Bloomstruck this spring and they are doing really well. Very similar to your experience, they do not wilt at all. I have plenty of mopheads and sometimes they wilt with the humidity and heat here but these are always straight up and strong. They get a couple hours of mid morning sunlight but mainly shade before and after. I am very happy with the color, they are a nice contrast to having the Originals. Another person I know has some much older Bloomstrucks and his are amazing, best purple I have seen. I didn't notice his until after I bought mine but it was nice to see that there is a possibility to have the dark purple in our area. Good luck to you!
