Backsplash color direction

Okay, I know the white subway tile doesn't really work in this combination. I started with white b/c we have the giant IKEA farm sink in white and a window that has a lot of white but it looks like a clash with the countertop (Curava Savaii). I'd like the countertop to be the "light" element.

I also know that the glass tile is a personal style choice not everyone will love and I'm okay with that. I love looking at it and it's pretty with the countertop. Our style runs to more color than less. Floor is going to be a Marmoleum pattern of light/dark grays and colors.

Glass tile part of backsplash is going to run from countertop up about 4-5" to bottom of window sill. Another tile (my question) is going to run from top of class tile to around 12-13 inches to come around just above the height of the back of the range and then continue above the range and then back down. Glass tile will be at the top of the range tile area for 4-5" (or more?) and will also fill the counter to cabinet space to the right of the frig.

We do not want to tile up to the bottom of the cabinets on the other walls because we want the horizontal cabinets to retain a little of a floating feel by being surrounded by the same wall color.

If I'm looking for a basic tile to go above the glass in this combination, should I be looking at more of cream/tan color or maybe gray or ?

Thank you - yes, you summarized much more succinctly what I was asking. :-)

Do you have a photo of the floor? If you like color, I was thinking the pale green glass on the second row might be pretty with the cabs and counter, or the cream on the second row, but don't know how the floor might interact. BTW, agree with crl_ about sticking with glass. I think your tile is adorable.

Thank you barncatz. I had the white subway tiles stuck in my mind from an earlier version of the overall design where the backsplash was going to be the money saver (ha ha!) that justified some other choices. I had a blind spot thinking of anything else but of course continuing with glass makes more sense. The flooring choice has not been finalized - stay tuned for more questions! I started with everything super colorful and now I'm toning down some elements to see where I really want the splash of color. The Marmoleum grays look really pretty with the countertop but a big part of the appeal of Marmoleum was being able to mix in some brighter colors - which is not quite the direction the counter/backsplash is going.

Those are really pretty colors. I will be eager to see your reveal, especially that countertop.

I love your tile choice! And I agree with choosing one of the neutral glass colors for the additional tile.

I had thought I would use white subway tile also but switched to cream. I did not make a final decision till the countertops were in - I am glad because having the countertops installed made a difference in how I perceived the total look. Your colors are very pretty. I have a small kitchen with a lot going on so I felt I needed to keep it simple and this is much plainer than yours - but it is a cream - "alabaster".

Thank you, everyone. This follow up question might get lost and need to be its own new question. Now that I'm thinking of switching to glass subway over the colorful glass tiles, what do you think about tiling all the way to the ceiling with a plain glass subway? The colorful glass tile would be "too much," right? (Besides being too much $$...) Or, just do my colorful glass tile on the lower 4-5" and paint for now? I have about 6" to the left of the horizontal cabinets and about 3" around the framed window. We originally nixed that idea b/c we didn't want that much white subway. (There will be a small soffit set back on the range wall to allow for venting at a 90 degree angle out the side.)

Just to complicate your decision further, this is an interesting look. There is a natural stopping point at the soffit in this picture which you do not have, but you could figure something out:

I'd forget the colorful tile and just use a subway glass tile. Yes, you can go all the way to the ceiling - nice clean look. You're going to get tired of that colorful tile very quickly and it's going to be very busy.

Have you seen Majra's kitchen? She also has Curava countertops and used a Walker Zanger tile called Waterfall for the backsplash.
