Yes it is an old Adriatic fig tree.

The cultivar has the tendency to split,when climatic condition are not ideal.

If i was you,i would ,thin the canopy,to where you can see the sky,trough the branches when you are under,the tree.

I would also check for nematode on the roots,(dig a little next to tree and see if roots got small balls hanging on them),if clean,then thin canopy as suggested,even remove one trunk totally,and after that ,make sure soil is neutral PH 7,if acidic add limestone to neutralize soil.

If the tree got nematode on roots ,it is not worth saving,so get rid of it only,and do nothing else.

Get yourself another tree,and plant it ,as far as you can from this one so ,the soil is clean of nematodes.

I would suggest Malta Black , will produce super fruits with minimum care and no splitting,or dropping.

I don't think California has nematodes. Could be wrong. But that tree needs more water. We are in CA and our restrictions state 3 x per week for an hour per emitter. We do use drip irrigation.

My adriatic is fabulous. But it's not as old or as big as yours.

Maybe take cuttings from your tree and start new trees.

Thanks folks. After I check for nematodes on the roots next weekend, I'll start planning the drip system. I read that figs needed lots of water, I wasn't sure how much. It sound like pretty often, but not deep watering like I was doing. I would like to keep the tree. It's a great source of shade.

Edit Note: !! This is not Adriatic (JH) ,(John Hood) strain.!

Adriatic JH strain is a much better cultivar with no problem of splitting or fruit dropping and with a sublime flavor and taste.!

California does have nematodes.

Figs don't need lots of water. Mulch it.
