Creature burrowed under the garden bed!

We returned home from two days out of town and found this large burrow under one of our raised beds. The hole is 8-10" in diameter. There is probably 6 cu ft of soil piled around it. The weird part: it ate about 10 of our winter squash leaves but left the squash untouched. Also left cucumbers and tomatoes.

We are in DC proper, but in a neighborhood surrounded by a large national park. Pest Control guy says it must be a rat. I'm skeptical based on that hole size and leaf eating.

We'd love to hear from others who have experience with large rodents!
