Hydrangea winterization

Fall is coming and I am thinking about protecting my newly planted hydrangeas and their cuttings. I am in zone 7 (MD) and have mostly macro's with a few paniculatas. Ive read other threads that recommend covering the plants with leaves in the fall and to not prune. My hydrangea cuttings should be rooted well-enough by the end of August (will have been rooting for about 6 weeks). I am wondering if they will be strong enough to survive an outdoor winter at this point. I considered putting the hydrangeas in a bed and covering them with leaves. I've also considered leaving them in pots in the garage over the winter. Any thoughts or suggestions would be appreciated.
