Heat resistant finish?

I saw the picture below online and want to do something like this. Sometimes I need a small trivet and sometimes I need a large trivet. Just one tree slice (maybe not quite as thick as these) would be perfect because I could just put whatever space between them to fit my need at the time. My dilemma is how to finish them with something so that they can be wiped with a damp cloth and so they are somewhat heat resistant. I think Varathane turns white if something hot is set on it. Is there a finish that is heat resistant?

I doubt you will find a finish with those properties. Anything I can think of is either a film finish, which will quickly be degraded by that kind of heat, or some type of oil finish that will get evaporated by the heat over time. You could put some short, decorative-headed bolts into the top surface so that the bottom of the hot pan will be held away from direct contact with the wood finish, and it might last longer that way. Sorry...that's the best I can do.

Most finishes start to degrade about 150F. So I agree with above because a pan off the stove or out of the oven is going to be significantly hotter and have a lot of thermal mass.

I think it might be best if I just treat this as if it were a cutting board, coating it with mineral oil and leaving it unfinished.
