Sorry to say, not my favorite palm. No special rules about planting; some people amend the soil, others think this is actually detrimental. They do not need your hottest sun, might, in fact, benefit from a bit of shade from the hottest sun. I guess what I don't like about them is that they grow solo dam/ slowly, and have those darn needles. I know 7a is limiting in palm selections, but also consider some Sabals (minors are bulletproof, also Louisiana is nice and hardy and a lot faster than the minor). We went through a few really bad winters, and I lost a couple of Trachycarpus (Windmill Palms). Even the Sabal minors seemed to die to the ground. This Summer, the Sabals regrew new fronds from their roots!

We had some european fan palms, they rotted out in the clay soil.

Yeah, the European Fans like a more arid climate and the clay is not helpful, but I do like Chamaerops palms.

Being that 7a is marginal for palms, you might also consider palm-like, non-palms such as Yuccas. My personal favorites for cold climates are the Trachys, but they are risky in severe Winters.

I also like yuccas, I have several. Needle palm is what I have, I like others better but this one seems one of the more hardy ones that do not need winter protection (besides removing snow cover).
