It's a tree fern, I'd say Cyathea cooperi. They like plenty of water but good drainage. What's it's location in terms of sun, air movement (wind), heat, etc.?

It's under the overhang of our porch so it doesn't get direct sunlight most of the day but it is very bright (Southern California). Almost no wind and it is the end of summer here so the days are pretty hot: 80s-90s.

That shouldn't be a problem for it. Beware of hot windy days with low relative humidity.
