Roses before more rain

We're expecting more rain, so I rushed out with my camera. Here are the results:

Grande Dame has lots of flowers...and most of the roses have their blooms standing up!! Night Owl is the purple one on the left.

Radox Bouquet - the smell is amazing!!

Parfum de Grasse - growing slowly from a bareroot this year.

Zaide - really love this new bare root. Always has flowers on it. And they have a lovely smell - apply/rosey. The apple is faint.

Here's Grande Dame and then a bush shot. This is a fabulous rose!!! Always has blooms on it. But so far just a faint scent.

Chandos Beauty - smells wonderful!!!

Sunflower

An interesting flower on Night Owl - looks like it has a darker edging.

Chicago Peace - finally getting some flowers.

Carol, they all look so pretty, fresh, and clean (no thrips). Your pictures are very enabling...Radox Bouquet, Perfum de Grasse, and Chandos Beauty! Would they make good cut roses?

Carol, those all look so healthy and beautiful! The Austins are so gorgeous, love them! Your Grande Dame is amazing, so many blooms, looking good! And Big Purple looks awesome! I need to learn more about your regimen for growing roses in pots, because it's obvious you know what you're doing. I have quite a few in pots right now, and even though I've had some success, I could do much better. With the type of soil I have in most of my yard, pots are easier than planting them in the ground.. Anyway, I love all your roses, so glad you posted these pictures.

You have some I'd love to have. Several! Close to making me want all of mine to die so I can start over again.

Love your grouping in your first pic. I love that setting!! Your roses look absolutely beautiful!! I am amazed at how beautiful they all are in pots. I can not grow them in pots. Bad pot mommy. Lol. Okay have I said the word pot enuf?!? Lol. I too would love to know your regime! Judy

Lovely roses! That suck that Grande Dame is not fragrant for you.. its one of my favorite most fragrant roses in my garden.. its currently on sabbatical due to the summer heat. Thanks for sharing your lovely roses.

Beautiful flowers! Brother Cadfael is one of the very first roses I bought and I absolutely love him. I cut some BC blooms today and they are perfuming my house. Thanks for sharing your lovely roses.

Ann - Nice to know that Bro. Cadfael is a favorite of yours. I wouldn't say that about it for me. But it's only in its 2nd year. It doesn't like the rain very much. :) I'll have to look to see if you posted pictures here.

haku84 - Grande Dame has never taken a break here - it's been okay even through the rain/hail. But then...we don't get the heat. I'm holding on to the hope of your words that next year the fragrance comes in. I do have roses that take 3 or 4 years to get fragrance.

Judy - I love growing roses in pots. Pots are good. Pots are better than in the ground here since we have glacial till. Pots are most welcome here. There, I like the word "pots" too! Thank you!! I love that area too!!

Irisgal - too funny!! You know your roses are wonderful!!! :)

Sara-Ann - like you, it's roses in pots - our soil is glacial till - like rocks mixed with clay. Thanks for your nice words. :)

Kentuckyrose - of those three (take with a grain of salt since I don't cut roses to bring inside) I would say that Chandos Beauty (which gets thrips - so you would have to use the cup/oil method - works like a charm) and Parfum de Grasse would be the better for cutting. However HMF has ratings for its roses as to how they do as cut flowers. Check them out! :) Of the three of them so far Chandos Beauty and Radox Bouquet are super fragrant. I haven't noticed much from PdG - although it's still young.

Kate - my Big Purple isn't the best plant for me. It doesn't have much vigor. But I'm really loving PAoK!!! Jubilee Celebration so far needs stronger canes. I'm working on that with pruning. It's still a young plant.

Lisa - I have to keep my fertilizing regime up to help combat the water which leaches out the good nutrients from the pots.

So here is what I do to combat the rain:

As most of you know, we have had oodles of rain. Waaay more than usual. Each month I fertilized with Gaia organic or Plant Tone (I switched each month). With the terrible amount of rain, I have been doing that twice/month. Whenever there was a break in the rain (doesn't have to be sunny) I went out and fertilized with my worm compost leachate and fish fertilizer (about 3 times/week). Then I added (we had our yard redone) a shovelful of clay (saved some for the mason bees) in each pot (pushed to the side so it doesn't impede water flow) to add more nutrients. So I basically upped the fertilizer to try to offset the leaching of nutrients.

Thanks for asking!! Thanks everyone for your kind comments.

Ken, the funny thing is even when we have horrible weather for a month and a half...we never seem to get rose diseases here. Don't know why...but I'm glad it's the case. :)

    Thanks you two!

Your pot routine must be working because they all look very pretty & healthy! They all look good but I love the colouring of your parfum de grasse. It looks so fresh & cheerful.

Beth - thank you!! Chandos Beauty is a fabulous rose!! It daily strikes me with its beauty and fragrance. I had to use the cup method though - to get rid of the thrips. You wouldn't be sorry if you bought Chandos Beauty!!
