Two separate showers in the bathroom?

We are building and have four children starting to enter teenage years. Each will have their own bedroom. I am torn between two shared bathrooms each (possibly ensuited Jack and Jill style), OR, one big bathroom with two separate shower cubicles in it, locker room style (so a private space to hang your towel, robe etc inside the shower but outside the wet area). Big looong sink with separate spaces above for each child and a separate toilet also. It will be cheaper to build and easier to clean, they'll still get privacy in the shower but will all be able to access the bathroom when needed. My husband thinks I'm crazy. What do you all think?

Agree the locker room concept doesn't make sense except in the very short-term. Another posted noted that as your kids grow into their teen years, they will want their privacy behind a closed door when in the bathroom. A big long sink also will not give any counter space (think make-up, hair dryers, brushes, razors, creams ... trust me you will need the counter space!). And again they won't want to be sharing the room as they grow. Privacy is a really big thing for adolescents, especially girls, and I would expect this and allow it for them.

As far as it seeming extravagant for each to practically have their own en suite - yest I agree that is not necessary, larger families share fewer bathrooms all the time, but you can do it and not treat it as a luxury by making sure they know they "own" the space and are responsible for it - keeping it neat and cleaning it regularly. With privilege comes responsibility.

I think 2 jack and jills would be better for resale value.

There are many different combinations for jack and jills. There are some factors to consider such as the space, the gender of the persons who is sharing them, their routine in the morning, the cost, the cleaning etc.

Two boys will get one bathroom, two girls the other one. It just seems a bit extravagant to for each child to practically have their own ensuite!

Agree with Suzanne. But, you could have the guest bath with a double head walk in shower too.

Stay away from unusual for resale value. Also, your teenagers will NOT want to be in the bathroom together, even to brush teeth - so 1 shower per bathroom, and two separate sinks & toilet spaces will reduce headaches and excuses to go to bed

If you had about 3-4 more kids you might consider it. Is that the plan and you don't need to worry about resale?

I have 7 kids and currently 2 bathrooms. We're adding on an upper story that includes one more bathroom. It's plenty for us, even with teens. Two Jack & Jill's would be awesome, and better for your resale. Or even one J&J and one hall bath.

Curious what you decided to do. Growing up I had 5 siblings. We had a large bathroom with 12’ long vanity. Enough room for us to all get ready. A separate shower/tub room and a separate toilet room. 1 large sink with a sprayer. Which was great!
