Sandpoint drain for standing water in yard???

The back section of our backyard has a problem with standing water, soggy soil/clay. We live near the water so our water table is pretty high. I was looking into having a curtain drain system installed, but I came across a local fellow who has been installing "sandpoint drains" which I never heard of.

Basically it's a deep hole drilled with a large auger that is filled with an ADS pipe surrounded by a media drain - stone or whatever, topped with soil. Sounds like a well of sorts.

Is anyone familiar with this drainage solution?
