Our island that sticks out without brackets has a steel frame underneath for support. The countertop installers should be able to tell you what is needed based on the length of table you want. Plywood under it with legs might work if it is short enough.

what do you plan for your countertop? granite? otherwise I think this is workable, but the installers should be able to tell you.

The island countertop will be quartz it will have a table/work area portion that is 8 foot long that is open on both sides with legs at the end (total island is 11 foot with 3 foot supported by a cabinet at one end). The cabinet maker said that the only thing that will work is honeycomb aluminum, but he is not installing the countertops (don't have a installer yet since we are still finalizing the cabinet design), so I was hoping to see what has worked for others.
