Externally Venting Island Hood

Houzzers - talk to me about island hoods that are externally vented and use an external blower.

I was looking for a 600CFM blower but if I want to get an external blower, I'm guessing it should be more powerful? how much more?

Can I use any blower with any hood - as long as the hood is designed to work with an external blower?

We have a 30" Thermador cooktop that we will be getting installed.

crcollins - I cross posted and have some responses that need more than the attention span possible on my phone.

We have a 30" Thermador star burner cook top- gas. 8ft ceiling, and about 5.5ft - 6ft to the outside along the ceiling between the joists.

Just had a rather disappointing visit to a local kitchen appliance store. Associate suggested he could work out what would best meet our needs and in store he was no more than a sales guy reading off a competitors website:( and leaving the maths to the HVAC guy.

That's why so many turn to Houzz I guess!

I'm surprised you haven't gotten any comments since folks here like to talk CFMs. I don't know what you mean by external blower. We have an externally vented Vent-A-Hood that we love. We have a 36" Blue Star range and a 36" hood. Some think your hood should be wider than your stove but I can't imagine needing more than what we have. Perhaps you'll still get some comments from the experts who can speak to air flow requirements, etc...

Oh, by external blower, I mean the fan itself is located outside the kitchen - roof, external wall etc. This is supposed to be nicer if you don't want the noise of a high speed fan overhead. Another option is in line blowers which are in the ductwork leading out rather than the hood itself (or so I understand).

There are spreadsheets you can find online to help you calculate how much more blower you need given a specific size and length of duct. Turns and total length are the main things that add friction and increase the amount needed.

We went with a 900 cfm inline blower for our 20-foot run with two 90-degree elbows.

I went with the Best Colonne 36" chimney hood along with the Best blower and MUA kit. It works great... very quiet on low, still quiet on high and pulls lots of air. I mounted the hood a few inches lower than normal, since my family is shorter and every inch really makes a difference. No issues or complaints so far!
