I think a simple soft rug would look nice under your table. You might also want to consider a drum chandelier...

I would prefer a different picture as well, what I want is a large round clock - metal with Roman numerals. Eventually I hope to do that. But husband is holding firm on the picture placement right now. I wish he didn't care... Like most men! Lol!

Love the idea of the drum light too, but we just did this whole room including the can lights and new Sheetrock in the ceiling. There is no way we are going to tear into that now. Plus, I'm still holding out for just making that area a sitting area with a small sectional. We have a formal dining room and this area isn't really necessary. For now though, we are working with what we have.

Crate & Barrel has a nice Dhurrrie rug (have different sizes as well) and then paint the back wall a similar blue to make it a feature wall and it will really highlight your art and draw your eyes in. You could add roman blinds to warm up your kitchen and place your chairs around the table vs on both sides. You'll end up with a kitchen that feels modern/minimal but warm.

I love that rug Maureen! We've also toyed with the idea of painting the back wall....hmmmm....great ideas! I have bamboo blinds in the future as well!

That table is too small for that space, definitely put down an area rug. Remove the rug from the kitchen, rugs do not belong there. Remove the sticks and the floor cactus. I would move the table further into the room and put a piece a furniture along that back wall.

I just out hardwood floors in...I NEED the rug to protect my floor! Plus I'm madly in love with it!!!

Keep the kitchen rug--you love it and it adds a lot of life to the space. (I live with a kitchen rug hater but I've stood my ground. Worth every second of defending it.) The bamboo shades will take you a long way towards a more complete space. You might consider putting the left plant on a small round accent table to add a little height symmetry. Adding a chandelier over the table would also be great if you're willing to make that change.

Chairs and everything are fine... but move that rug in the kitchen out , it has nothing to do with the area... get a more contemporary runner there and a large rug under the table and chairs. NO to the drum light fixture someone suggested above. Get some drama over the table.... look on this site under contemporary chandeliers.

Love the art in your dining room! So many great colors that you can pull from it for an accent color. Dark gray would enhance all the colors in the art without fighting with it. Also love the snake plant in the basket. What is keeping you from making this room your siting room? 1 cool chair and maybe a side table would do for now and add a sectional later or maybe you will find you don't even want it. Not every room has to be stuffed with furniture.

As a side note, a chandelier over the dining room and pendant lights over the island could be a nice touch.

A rug in the dining room would nicely define that space from the kitchen. However, would it be difficult to pull the chairs out with the rug there (as if you were getting up from the table)? That could become a real pain if the legs tend to catch on rug surfaces.
