I don't think I have the zone 5 experience you're looking for but I hate to see your post just sitting...

I'm kind of zone 5 with winter lows getting down to -10 tops and my lycoris squamigera does fine in an open, exposed location. They're not even planted deeply since the soil is thin.

if you enter into the world of magic lilies be prepared for their sulking over any root disturbance and root damage. Mine have sat for over a year without a sign of growth before finally sprouting. Also look for spring foliage types, generally speaking the fall foliage types are significantly less cold hardy.
