Kentucky Rose - while my CdG is still small, I believe it would make a good cut flower. I looked up the rating on HMF, and it says Excellent as a cut flower.

Thanks Ken! I really admire everyone on this forum who are growing roses under some very challenging conditions - heat, humidity, rain, hail, snow, bugs, animals, etc. I only have heat and it's pretty dry. Congrats to you and everyone for all the wonderful roses you've grown this season!

Ann, beautiful beyond everything is Jude. Oh what a gorgeous blooms!!!how old is your JtObsc? On what rootstock? Mine is own root 3 yo and sort of stingy bloomer but i forgive her everytime she brings me flowers like yours... just simply an eye candy.thanks for sharing will look forward for more from you.great job!!!

Hi Katalea - Thank you for your kind comments! My JtO is own-root as well, planted in mid-summer 2013, so this is the third year in the ground. First two years he was an ankle biter. This is a photo from last year; I think I got only one other bloom besides these two.

Here's a photo I took a few days ago.

The photo flattens out the shrub so you don't get a sense of the dimensions. But you can see Sharifa Asma (planted this Spring) below left which mirrors JtO's size in the first photo from last year. I plan to remove the diseased tree in back on the right. I might move JtO to that space so he can get as big as he wants and be a "garden feature". The only problem is that while only a few feet away, there's a lot more afternoon shade in that circle so I'm not sure. I've only been growing roses for about 5 years and have never experienced such explosive growth, but I guess it's a nice problem to have if you love the rose. I wish you well with your JtO!

Ann thank you for your story!)) Your JTOb is a BEAUTY i think she will be a great bush.congrats!!! already bearing so many blooms.mine is suffering in bad spot i think. Or sometimes i think im not good with roses. ( Makes me sad.but on the other hand here in Texas west of Houston , hard to grow roses esp.with this ever heat and invasion of chilli thrips.and yes Ann i agree deseased tree must go. i will try to post my picture of my bush but its puny poor few twigs... love love love your Jude!! Elvi - The first thing I noticed in your photo are the irises which I simply can't grow in my yard. I live near a fabulous bearded iris farm and have tried growing them but to no avail. So maybe there's something about garden conditions that support or deter the success of a given plant, and it's not that we are good or bad gardeners - sometimes we just don't have the information we need which is why these forums are so helpful.

One thing that happened to JtO was that he finally got a lot of water during this past winter's rainy season. He was planted during the beginning of our current drought. Since our watering restrictions have eased a little bit, I'm now watering a bit more, and I'm sure that's helped him. I recall that the bearded iris doesn't need too much water - maybe your JtO isn't getting enough? The twiggy look does suggest it's missing something, like the roots aren't developing sufficiently leading to a weak plant. My JtO was tiny but it did look healthy. Not all DA roses love lots of water but I think JtO is one of those, especially if he's trying to grow in the Texas heat.

It does look like your roses are planted a bit too close to each other. Perhaps if you could move JtO to a spot where he gets good morning sun and only partial sun in the afternoon, plus good water, he might take off.

I just joined my local rose society to learn more about how to successfully grow roses in my microclimate - you might contact yours and get some tips on how others are growing DA roses.

Thank you Ann for all your guidance!!)) You are right on all points. Thank you for valueable advices. Planting this bed was quite a story involving me,my mom, and lots of digging(apparently in vain)bc big hole didnt drain any water at all.so we ended up piling up soil creating raised bed. Those poor irises got shock twice and didnt bloom this year as my mom predicted. I wil find some other spot for my roses, this one is crowded. I am still new to rose growing and unfortunately learn my lessons hard way. Thank you again Ann and happy gardening to you!:-))

Ann, omg, your roses are so beautiful, thats mean I have hope on my JTO, (mine is own root too, I got it last may and its so little, I was gonna buy grafted next year coz I have no patient until I saw urs), how about fragrance clouds and moulineaux ? Are they blooming good? Because Im getting them for next spring.

Hi Red Roses - Fragrant Cloud and Molineux are very good bloomers but I'm in a much warmer climate than yours. Fragrant Cloud for me is almost always in bloom and grows in bloom clusters. Here's a photo from last year.

Molineux is a bloom machine but the fragrance is lighter than Fragrant Cloud. In your cooler climate, Molineux's fragrance might be stronger.
