When the wind comes

We had the strangest storm come through SW OKC this afternoon about 3:00. It rained and the wind did blow. I stood by the back patio doors and watched the rain lithely swirl around the patio. It never tried to lift anything but I have never witnessed rain whirl in little whirlwinds. They said 50mph but I would bet closer to 60-65mph here. It scooted everything didnot blow things it swirled them. Of course several of my large terracotta pots with the big cactus in them were swirled till they fell over and busted several feet from where they started. It was all just so strange. Of course all the destruction and only got 1/4" out of it, but it was going in circles so the rain gauge may not be accurate.

still brewing out west so we might get another chance at some water tonight. The wind can stay away, had enough of that today.

my Branson slept through the whole thing. He got up from his nap and found Nana outside cleaning up from the rain whirlwinds.

"Rain whirlwinds"that's a new one for me. Thought I had just about seen it all.

stockergal, I was at SW 89th (between Penn and Western) at 3 and it got CRAZY. Around 3:40, I headed south down Western to WestMoore HS and the roads were flooded in spots.

However, over here at Indian Hills and Sooner we apparently got zip.

It was spotty. We got the tailend of it. One mile south got zilch!!!! Tonight it is all around us but I don't think we will get a drop???

did you see any "rainwhirlwers" on 89th? I hope somebody saw the same thing or I am going to doubt my sanity!! Haha

Stockergal, I was thinking dust devils, till you said it broke your pot. That's a bit stronger than a dust devil.

I left my neighborhood at 5:30 to a few sprinkles. Drove 2 miles north and headed east and was in a deluge, sometimes I couldn't see. Deep puddles on the road. Thunder, lightening. When I got home tonight, nothing in the gauge. It came so close. It did cool things off significantly. There are still a few storms around, maybe later.

Claremore got all that rain I drove through. Claremore flooded and without power. Mary, you okay?

stockergal, I was thinking they sounded like dust devils too, only with rain instead of dust. I wonder if such a thing is possible on a small scale like what you saw on your property last night? While most dust devils are small, some of them get big enough to do damage. A few years back there was one someplace (maybe California) that was the equivalent of an EF-1 tornado and even damaged some permanent structures that it hit.

I'm sorry you ended up with such a mess. It seems to me that you've had more than your share of swirling winds over the last few years and that they ought to just go away and leave you alone.

Amy, It is so frustrating to be that close to rain and to have it miss you. Did you get any rain later on?

Mary, I hope you're okay and didn't lose power.

Nothing here. Hot and dry. I watched the storms on radar last night and was glad to see some folks were getting rain! Any rain at all in the usually hot and dry month of August is just a blessing.

Never got more rain. I will have to water today, but I need to do some shopping first. One of the chickens laid an egg in the garden path. I'm betting it was Miss Independence, since, yeah, she must do everything differently. Knock wood, she has been staying in the yard.

Last night DH went out to put the chickens to bed. 4 of them were inside WITH THE DOOR SHUT! Speckles was on the roof. I forgot to look at it today to see if the hook broke. It's one that lifts up like a garage door, rather than a regular door. Can't figure out who shut the door.

I went out early tonight, before 8:00, they were all in the house and the door was open. However, bumping against that door is probably enough to dislodge the hook that keeps it open. I'm guessing she could have bumped it flying up to the roof. The mystery continues...

It sounds like Speckles is on a mission to drive you crazy.

We have one Plymouth Rock hen who thinks she is supposed to live in the garage. You open the door to walk in and she runs in behind you. Then she hides under the grill or behind the deep freeze so you cannot get her out of there. I try to keep the garage doors closed to keep her out, but since our garage is large (1200 s.f.) and has three roll-up doors and two walk-in doors, and is used for storage as well, someone is constantly going in and out of there. When Chris is working on his house, he is in and out of the garage all day getting tools and such. That chicken spends more time in the garage than she does outdoors. A couple of days ago I came outside in the middle of the day, and that hen had about 15 other chickens with her, standing and waiting at the walk-in door so they all could run into the garage the next time someone opened the door. I ran them off before I went into the garage and I closed the door quickly so they couldn't run in behind me. I don't understand why she has become obsessed with the garage.
