Are you speaking of exterior or interior shutters? Neither is passe if they are appropriate to your home's style and period. Post a photo for us to see.

I prefer blinds to shutters for the interior, but if you are going to do shutters just make sure the levers are wide ... small shutters is what will make them look dated. I don't like shutters on the outside of a house unless it's a period house.
